Maki es una yōkai pulpo que vive sola en una vieja casa. Un día conoce a Wataru, un hombre ajizai (cangrejo ermitaño) que se ha mudado a la casa de al lado.

A Maki le interesa ayudar a Wataru en lo que necesite para no sentirse tan sola. Sin embargo, al ser un pulpo, a menudo se entromete demasiado en su vida o usa sus ventosas de forma incómoda para Wataru.

A pesar de sus torpes intentos de ayudar, Wataru comienza a apreciar la compañía de Maki. Poco a poco se vuelven amigos y deciden vivir juntos formalmente.
